Great-grandmother, 72, being deployed to Iraq
LAWTON, Okla. (AP) — A 72-year-old great-grandmother is preparing for deployment to the war zone in Iraq and will become one of the oldest Department of Defense civilian workers in the war zone."I volunteered," said Lena Haddix of Lawton, who has five children, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. "I wanted to do something for the country, because I was always left behind taking care of the children."
Haddix was a military wife from 1950 until 1979, and has worked at the Fort Sill Post Exchange, or PX, since 1977.
Oddly enough, I have relatives (my mother-in-law's twin sister) in Lawton, OK. I've never been there. But my impression from family discussion is that it is exactly the place you'd expect a 72-year-old female military volunteer to come from. :-)
On the one hand, you must admire Lena Haddix's commitment, belief, consistency, and chutzpah.
On the other hand, you gotta wonder what the US is coming to when a 72-year-old volunteers for active duty overseas and the President didn't when he was in the military.
