I spent yesterday and this morning at the XGDX, a small game development conference put on by the parent company of Premiere Press.
In the central area, they have a C64, Atari 800, and Apple II which are to be the centerpieces in a retro programming contest tomorrow evening. There is a small selection of product and some manuals for each machine.
Many of the attendees are young (down to 17!), and apparently they haven't ever seen the "power" of these machines. Among the quotes I heard were "where's the c++ compiler?" and "how do you do a matrix multiply on this thing?" I found myself explaining the concepts of custom font-based graphics and sprites several times.
I shudder to think what they actually came up with during the contest.
